There’s a new Dragon Age on the way, and the difficult third outing will be called Inquisition…

Heralded as one of the best RPGs of recent times, the original Dragon Age: Origins was a storming success, especially on the PC, which is the native platform for RPGs of Dragon Age’s style. A true, hardcore role player, it didn’t pull its punches when it came to challenging, tactical combat, and an expansive world to explore.

Sadly, the second game, Dragon Age II, didn’t fare quite as well, and was criticised by many for being too linear, samey and dull. The game world was drab, and the story rather lacking when compared to the epic first game’s adventure.

Well, now Bioware has announced that a third game in the series is on its way. Dragon Age III: Inquisition will be powered by a new platform that will use the Frostbite 2 engine, featured in Battlefield 3, as its foundation. Obviously, it’s going to receive plenty of tweaks to repurpose it for an RPG mould.

The game itself will apparently take place in Orlais, on the continent of Thedas, and events will occur during a vicious civil war. As an inquisitor, it’ll be the player’s job to travel to Orlais to find the root cause of the conflict, and decide how best to stop the oncoming horrors, including a horde of demons ready to be set lose on the unsuspecting populace.

As well as a game that promises to deliver a large world full of important choices and heavy customisation, it’s believed that the next Dragon Age will also include a multiplayer co-op element, which should add greatly to the game’s appeal, as this kind of expansive RPG works well when there’s more than one noble adventurer questing the land.

Whether or not the game will improve upon the distinctly average second release will, of course, remain to be seen, but as the game is being developed primarily by the same team responsible for the first outing, signs are looking positive that this is going to be the Dragon Age sequel fans have been waiting for. More news as we get it.
