Whilst we here in the UK have to wait until November to see Paul Thomas Anderson's latest film The Master, cinema audiences in America are lucky enough to have it already. It's in limited release now, with it expanding to more cities at the end of the week.
Needless to say there's a fair bit of anticipation to see how the director follows up There Will Be Blood. The cast of the film have been on the promotional trail in support of it of late and the latest interview is from Joaquin Phoenix, who stars in the film as Freddie Quell, a former member of the Navy who lacks purpose in life. He's soon embraced by Philip Seymour Hoffman's cult leader and rises through the ranks of the organisation.
Here's what Phoenix had to say about the film: “I've seen a rough version, with no score. I thought it was a comedy. I did! I laughed the entire time I was watching it. I was sitting with Paul and said to him, 'this is hilarious.”
He continued: “I have a horrible sense of humour where I think discomfort is funny – partly because I experience discomfort a lot, and it's a way of laughing at it and getting a release.”
Well there you have it. More laughs could be had from the film than the trailer had suggested. If you share Phoenix's sense of humour that is.
