Warner Bros’ forthcoming adaptation of Japanese sci-fi novel All You Need Is Kill, a kind of Groundhog Day/alien invasion mash-up, may be headed up by Tom Cruise…

As the Akira live-action remake ploughs on, Bourne Identity and Fair Game director Doug Liman is readying his own adaptation of a Japanese property: in this instance, Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s novel, All You Need Is Kill.

Now, Warner have been planning a western version of the book for just over a year, but Liman was only attached as director in August. Now, though, it seems as though the project’s moving along in earnest, with Variety reporting that Tom Cruise has agreed to star.

We haven’t read the source novel for ourselves, but it sounds intriguing; written for a young adult audience, the short novel sounds a bit like a cross between an alien invasion story and Source Code. Its protagonist is a soldier who’s sent out to battle invaders in a special form of armour, and finds himself repeatedly thrown back into the fray after he’s killed.

The central role was originally intended for a much younger actor, but Joby Harold has reportedly rewritten Dante Harper’s script to suit a chap of Cruise’s vintage. It’s thought that Cruise will start work on All You Need Is Kill in late 2012, after he’s finished up on another sci-fi movie, Joseph Kosinski’s Oblivion.

Groundhog Day with battle armour and invading aliens – how can it possibly fail? More news on this as it comes in.
