Matt Damon in The Bourne Ultimatum

There may yet be a future Jason Bourne film with Matt Damon starring, and Paul Greengrass directing, according to the actor…

Earlier in the week, it was reported that Matt Damon has remarked that nobody bothered to call him with regards The Bourne Legacy, specifically the announcement that it would be pressing ahead. The character of Jason Bourne is not in the film, and thus Damon won't be in it either. And furthermore, Tony Gilroy is now locked into the director's chair. Given that Damon had said in the past that he wouldn't do another Bourne movie unless Paul Greengrass was once more at the helm, it's thus unsurprising that he won't be in Legacy.

However, the door doesn't appear shut on Jason Bourne for good.

In a fresh interview at Entertainment Weekly, Damon has clarified the circumstance of his comments earlier in the week. He told EW:

"I was in a roundtable and they were, like, badgering me about the next Bourne movie. And I was like, "I don't know, guys, they didn't call me. They're doing another movie with Tony." I think it's a smart thing to do. It doesn't interfere with Paul and me doing a movie. As I understand it, if you think of X-Men and then Wolverine, it's just that process in reverse. Tony doesn't want to hurt the Bourne story. So as I understand it, Jason Bourne is alive in the world that Tony's going to create. I don't appear in it, but it's very much that world. As far as Paul and I are concerned, as long as there's room for us to come in and do another one, we're thrilled."

He also confirmed that, while he heard the news about The Bourne Legacy online, "it wasn't like it was totally out of the blue".
