George Lucas interested in making more Star Wars movies?

We should kick off by saying that George Lucas seemed pretty adamant that, once Revenge Of The Sith had been released, there wouldn't be any more Star Wars films. Or at least live action ones.

But the past day has seen the Internet filled with chatter that The Bearded One may yet be tempted to make a few more. The rumour has arisen as the result of a report over at IESB, a site that has tended to break quite a few big stories in the past. And it's suggesting that, as he sets about converted his six existing Star Wars films to 3D, Lucas has "gotten the itch", and that he's "already looking ahead into launching an entirely new trilogy in that galaxy far, far away".

As for timescales, the rolling out of the existing films into 3D is set to run until 2015 or 2016, and it's unlikely we'd see anything before that.

And heck, we're just going to go ahead and say it: we'd be surprised, although not shocked, if there was a brand new Star Wars film to follow. Yet alone a brand new trilogy.

Lucas has shown little enthusiasm for making episodes 7, 8 and 9 of the Star Wars saga, and we don't think it's going out on a limb to suggest that the tolerance of many enthusiasts was tested enough by the prequel trilogy we got.

Furthermore, it should be noted that LucasFilm has already denied this particular story, although history has proven that doesn't necessarily mean anything.

More to the point, though, Lucas is 66 now, if our sums are correct, and this would have him committing to the best part of another decade of filmmaking, that could take him towards his 80th birthday. We'd be surprised if that wasn't a factor.

George Lucas hasn't been shy of trying to earn a few more quid to add to his bank account, granted, but with the ongoing Clone Wars TV show, a fifth Indiana Jones adventure and the planned Star Wars TV series, we can't help thinking that another live action Star Wars movie is unlikely to happen on his watch.
