Wes Craven's self-referential slasher franchise returns with Scream 4, which reunites the director with surviving cast members of the earlier films, including David Arquette, Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox, as yet another incarnation of Ghostface begins a fresh bout of stabbings.
The first official Scream 4 trailer introduces a new generation of students, which includes Heroes' Hayden Panettiere and Scott Pilgrim's Rory Culkin, and a new set of post-modern directives.
"Modern audiences have become savvy to the rules of the original," Culkin's character knowingly says. "There are still more rules, but the rules have changed. The unexpected is the new cliché."
Apparently, a Scream for the YouTube generation, this fourth instalment will see its deranged killer filming his crimes with a camcorder. Could this be a passing reference to Michael Powell's controversial 60s shocker, Peeping Tom? Given the previous films' frequent homages to horror movies past, it's certainly possible.
Scream 4 is due for release on 15 April 2011, with a UK date still to be announced.
