Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles

A further Starship Troopers movie gets the go ahead – but is this one going to hark back to the Roughnecks animated series?

Since the outstanding original first hit our screens in the 1990s, it's fair to say that the Starship Troopers franchise has been hammered into the ground, killed by a pair of straight-to-DVD sequels that aren't fit to wear the name. Throwing away the subtext of the original in favour of very cheap bug bashing, the third and most recent movie lured Casper Van Dien back to star, but even so, the end result wasn't great (better than expected, but sorely lacking in investment, and obviously so).

However, that's not stopped the bandwagon rolling, and according to StarshipTroopersFans.net, a fourth movie has now been commissioned. But given how ropey the last two were, why are we interested?

A fair question, and glad you asked it. For, as it happens, Starship Troopers 4 is going to be a fully CG-animated movie. This, in itself, wouldn't be so interesting, were it not for the quality of Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles, the animated series that proved to be the most compelling spin-off from the first movie thus far.

For now, you can read more about the project here, and we suspect we might get to see the film towards the end of next year at a guess.
