In-demand Ryan Reynolds is attached to two comic book movies: R.I.P.D. and Deadpool. But it looks like he’s only going to be able to do one of them…
Ever since, in the aftermath of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, it was announced that there was a spin-off Deadpool movie in the works, Ryan Reynolds' name has been attached to it. The actor played the role in the Wolverine movie, and was very much one of the best things in it. Thus, when Fox began exploring the idea of doing a film based around the Deadpool character, who else was it likely to call?
However, then Ryan Reynolds got really busy. He's already shot The Green Lantern for Warner Bros, and he's regularly linked with many new films. Furthermore, Warner Bros is reportedly keen to pursue a sequel to The Green Lantern as soon as feasibly possible.
And it increasingly looks as if Reynolds has a choice between two projects to make. He's already committed to a pair of new movies. The first is a comedy called The Change-Up, for Wedding Crashers director David Dobkin. And then he's starring opposite Denzel Washington in Safe House.
After that? Well, in a chat with io9, Reynolds reckons it's going to come down to either Deadpool, or R.I.P.D., the latter based on the comic of the same name. As he told the site, "it's obviously likely that they'll both get made. But I think it would be more likely that only one of them gets made with me."
So, which is it going to be? "People sort of ask this question, like I have any say in the matter. They're both movies I'm interested in, they're both movies that are in fast-track development. But I never say I'm doing a movie until I break for lunch the first day. Because it's such a crapshoot, this industry," he said.
As things stand, R.I.P.D. already has director Robert Schwentke attached to it (he's the man behind the upcoming adaptation of Red, due in the next few weeks). Meanwhile, Fox is keen for Robert Rodriguez to tackle Deadpool, but a deal hasn't been done yet.
We suspect we'll find out by this time next year which way Reynolds will be turning next. In the meantime, we finally get to see his reportedly-brilliant thriller Buried in a few weeks' time. That'll certainly keep us busy.
