There’s been much speculation on where the developer of the successful Witcher games would go next. Would it stick with the swords and sorcery theme? Would a modern day project be in the works? Well, nope, as the team has gone all sci-fi on us.
Cyberpunk 2077 is set to be an open-world title, and is based upon the Cyperpunk 2020 pen-and-paper RPG. It’ll be an adult-focused title that will feature a non-linear story and heavy character development and customisation options. Many of the mechanics will mirror those seen in The Witcher, no surprise given how well those titles, especially the sequel, was received.
The game is set further ahead in time than the original tabletop RPG as the team wishes to stamp its own mark on the license, and the extra years in the bank will let them do just that, able to expand on the story and tech featured in the existing universe. As far as availability, there’s no release date or platform specification at this time, but we’d expect to see the game arrive on PC and console (most likely next gen) around 2014, possibly 2015.
