Director Michael Bay is nearly done on his latest film, Pain And Gain, and that'll then leave him free to get moving on Transformers 4, which is due in cinemas in the summer of 2014.
So far, we know that the idea is for the new film to go off in a slightly different direction, with new leads, and new Transformers. It's reportedly still going to be tied in some way to the narrative of the first three films, but we won't find out how until nearer the time.
With Shia LaBeouf not headlining the movie, it does beg the question as to who the lead characters will be this time around. Over at SpoilerTV, the first rumour surrounding this has popped up. It reckons that the new female lead in Transformers 4 will be "a high school senior", with the male lead being "her boyfriend, a Texas racing driver". Make of that what you will.
Meanwhile, Hugo Weaving has given an interview where he seems to have ruled out returning for another film. Weaving had been the voice of Megatron, but according to Collider, he's unlikely to return. Not that he enjoyed it in the first place. Declaring his Transformers work "a two hour job", Weaving admitted that "it was one of the only things I’ve ever done where I had no knowledge of it, I didn’t care about it, I didn’t think about it. They wanted me to do it. In one way, I regret that bit. I don’t regret doing it, but I very rarely do something if it’s meaningless". Weaving also revealed that he'd never met Michael Bay, and that the director hasn't been in touch about the new film.
Bay did talk to Entertainment Tonight a week or two ago, though, revealing that Transformers 4 will "open the franchise up" for future films, and that it would introduce mainly new characters.
