Elysium and RoboCop release dates delayed

Elysium moves back five months, RoboCop is pushed back to 2014...

Production is well under way on the much-discussed reimaginging/reboot/retread of the RoboCop franchise. The ingredients you probably already know: Jose Padilha is directing, Joel Kinnaman is in the title role, and the supporting cast includes the likes of Michael Keaton, Samuel L Jackson and Abbie Cornish.

It seemed that things were all going to plan, too, with the original idea being to release the film in August 2013. However, Sony has now announced that it's delaying the release of the new RoboCop until February 7th 2014 (which puts it against the Need For Speed film). The reason for the delay isn't particularly clear, although we wouldn't be surprised if a 3D bolt-on comes as a result of it. Perhaps the slightly disappointing box office of Total Recall in a similar August release slot didn't help.

A further by-product of the RoboCop delay is that Sony has moved the eagerly-awaited Elysium back five months, too. Elysium is the first film from director Neill Blomkamp since District 9, a movie that had more luck with an August release. As such, Elysium is now set for its US bow on August 9th 2013, rather than its original release date of March 1st 2013. It does feel like one of those films we've been waiting an age for, but it should be worth it.

More on RoboCop and Elysium as we get it.
