Joss Whedon on nearly turning down The Avengers 2

You've got London pub food to thank for Joss Whedon deciding to press ahead with The Avengers 2...

You don't need us to tell you that Joss Whedon is a busy man, what with Much Ado About Nothing being picked up for distribution, and the small matter of the S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series, a couple of web projects (including a follow-up to Dr Horrible's Sing-Along Blog), and the small matter of The Avengers 2 on the horizon.

It was the latter, though, that gave him the most food for thought. So much thought, in fact, that he came close to turning the film down. While admitting that there's a business part of the question when deciding to make the sequel, his primary concern was "do I have another story to tell about these people". In the end, he did.

"I was in London and I went to a pub and had some fish and chips and a pint and started writing in my notebook. I’m writing if I was going to do this what would I say and 40 minutes later I filled the notebook. So I text my agent and said to make the deal".

He added that "I’m so in love with that universe and the characters and they way they were played and I have so much more I want to do with them. I know I can’t match the success of the first one but I can try to make a better film and that’s what I’m excited about, that’s the new room of fear I’m entering now.”

The full interview, which took place with Co.Create, is really well worth a ready, incidentally. In it, Whedon talks about why he did Much Ado About Nothing in the first place, and why it made more sense than taking a holiday after The Avengers. You can read it here.

The Avengers 2 arrives in 2015.
