Hotel Transylvania director Genndy Tartakovsky has been talking about his adaptation of Popeye...

Genndy Tartatovsky's new animated movie, Hotel Transylvania, hits UK cinemas next month, and it looks like decent family fun in the run up to Halloween. The film, combined with his impressive collection of work for Cartoon Network over the years, has clearly impressed people with movie commissioning power, too, as he's been approached to bring Popeye back to the big screen.

What's more, he's been chatting to IGN about his intentions. After all, how do you make an older property like Popeye work for a new audience?

“Well, that's the biggest challenge, that's exactly it. The only reason I took it is that they gave me a script and I didn't like it and said, 'if you want me to do Popeye, it has to be broad physical comedy with half the dialogue that a normal movie has, and you want it to be visceral' and they said, 'yes that's what we want.' So that's the thing, we're going to do it ten times more cartoony than even what we did with Hotel T because that's what Popeye is. But the biggest challenge is how do you take a tattooed, pipe smoking sailor into today?"

The project is in its early stages, so there's still some way before all of that is figured out. In the meantime, there is, of course, an existing Popeye movie. That'd be the wonderful mess that is the Robert Altman directed, Robin Williams starring effort from 1980, which is well worth a look if you have yet to see it.

More on Popeye when it's available.
