Borderlands 2 goes all Smash TV thanks to a promotional browser-based release

Borderlands 2 is arriving soon, and the sequel to the breakout hit that was the original game is all about guns, guns and more guns, as well as an epically long 50+ hour campaign. With four new protagonists and the promise of exploring even more of the mysterious planet of Pandora, the second outing of Gearbox’s FPS/RPG hybrid is looking very tasty, but did you know you can play it right now?

Well, okay, the game isn’t actually ready quite yet, but a 16-bit style incarnation of the game has been released online, and in true Borderlands fashion, this retro shooter lets you kill the denizens of Pandora with all sorts of weapons.

The web game, titled The Border Lands, which is played right inside your browser, is almost identical to the Williams classic, Smash TV, and sees you fighting off wave after wave of foes in single screen arenas whilst picking up new weapons from gun crates dropped by dispatched nasties.

It may not be the most in-depth preview of the game, but the retro style of the promo is certainly eye-catching, and for a free web game, it’s actually quite a bit of fun. Visit the link below to have a go in preparation for the full game’s arrival.

Borderlands 2 is due for release on September 18 in North America for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, and on September 21 in the UK.
