X-men Origins: Wolverine. Coming in 2009.

Confirming what most had guessed already, here's the official synopsis for The Wolverine, starring Hugh Jackman.

It's safe to say that we've known for some time what the basis for The Wolverine would be, particularly given the widely-reported Japanese setting of the film. Still, the official synopsis for the next X-Men spin-off has now been released, and while there's not much particularly new about it, it does cement a few things.

It reads thus: "Based on the celebrated comic book arc, The Wolverine finds Logan, the eternal warrior and outsider, in Japan. There, Samurai steel will clash with adamantium claw as Logan confronts a mysterious figure from his past that will leave him forever changed."

The aforementioned celebrated comic book arc is the Chris Claremont and Frank Miller series that is widely regarded as the finest rendition of the character, so this certainly bodes well after the disappointment that was X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Director James Mangold has certainly been an enthused chap about the project of late if his new Twitter feed is anything to go by. Here are a few of the director's tweets:

“Movies I think about as I make #TheWolverine : Eastwood’s Josie Wales, Powell’s Black Narcissus, Hitchcock’s Rear Window, Marnie, Vertigo.”
“Today I am starting an intense set piece of action and drama at the yashida compound set. Logan, Yukio and Shingen.”
"Amazing images being made. Great actors in this show. Exhilarating to direct in multiple languages. Real emotion transcends language."

Sounds promising. Fingers crossed the end project will end up as good as Mangold is hinting, and as good as the source material deserves.

The Wolverine is scheduled for release on the 26th July 2013.
