The cast for the forthcoming new take on RoboCop, being directed by Jose Padilha, is shaping up exceptionally well. We’ve made this point several times, but given the general cynicism that surrounded the news that RoboCop was getting the remake/reboot treatment, great lengths seem to have been gone to in order to bring some real quality to the film.
Padilha himself is an inspired appointment, and few can grumble about the casting of Joel Kinnaman as the new RoboCop. The supporting cast, meanwhile, features Gary Oldman, Jackie Earle Haley, Hugh Laurie, Abbie Cornish and Samuel L Jackson.
And then there’s Jay Baruchel. He was, perhaps surprisingly, linked with the film early this week. It seems like he’s about to sign on the dotted line, too, as details of where he fits in have emerged. Baruchel is set to play the head of marketing for OmniCorp in the movie. That alone hints at the different direction the new RoboCop is heading in.
Shooting begins in September in Toronto, and the film itself is released in August 2013.
