There’s a bit of fresh villain chatter and more Simon Pegg too as a few new hints are dropped regarding the upcoming sequel to the Star Trek reboot…
It's been quite quiet in the land of the Star Trek sequel for a little while, with the likes of Alex Kurtzman, Damon Lindelof, Roberto Orci and JJ Abrams beginning to piece together the pieces of the new film, which is due in cinemas in 2012. However, as part of the 200th issue of SFX magazine, Abrams, Orci and Kurtzman have been talking to the fine folks there, and dropped one or two more hints.
To be fair, the trio are still keeping their cards, understandably, very close to their chest. But Kurtzman and Orci do have a few things to say about the film. With regards, for instance, to the choice of a villain, and the speculation that Klingons (and perhaps Khan) may somewhere be involved, Orci noted that "introducing a new villain in the sequel is tempting, because we now have this incredible new sandbox to play in. On the other hand, some fans really want to see Klingons and it's hard not to listen to that. The trick is not to do something that's been seen before just because you think it will be a shortcut to likeability."
We're also, it's been revealed, going to be seeing a lot more of Simon Pegg in the sequel than we did in Abrams' first Star Trek movie, and both Kurtzman and Orci remain keen to balance the darker elements of their story with humour. Orci, in particular, noted: "Humour is part of the franchise and I think it's critical, certainly to the Bones-Spock relationship. It's definitely a big part of the Bones-Kirk relationship. So, I don't see any world where humour doesn't play a part."
For more on all of this, the 200th birthday issue of SFX is out now. And it's also worth having a gander over at TrekMovie here.
