It was a bit of a gamble, all told, when Sony took the decision to resurrect the Men In Black franchise, a decade after Men In Black 2 had generally become nobody’s favourite film. But the gamble has been won. Men In Black 3’s global box office total is over $600m now, and appreciating that it wasn’t an expensive film to make, nor to promote, it’s still likely to see profit. Especially when the DVD and Blu-ray release comes around.
It should perhaps come as little surprise, then, to learn that Sony isn’t done with Men In Black just yet, and that it’s planning a Men In Black 4. No firm details are in place yet, but Douglas Belgrad, the president of Columbia Pictures, told The Hollywood Reporter that “we're very pleased with the financial performance of Men in Black 3, and we believe it is an ongoing franchise. We're going to do [another one], but we don't have clarity yet on how it should be done."
We can’t imagine it’d be much cheaper to make a Men In Black 4, but given the international, non-US performance of the third film, and the friendlier reviews this time around, it’s perhaps unsurprising that it’s going ahead.
