We've had our fair share of major cinematic releases this summer, but arguably the biggest (or at least the second biggest) is but two weeks away from being released. That'd be The Dark Knight Rises; the concluding part of Christopher Nolan's trilogy.
In advance of the film’s release, script writer Jonathan Nolan has been talking about the film, in particular the concerns some have raised over there being too many characters. "Oh, I don't believe in any of that shit", he said. "Everybody is always looking for excuses as to why something worked and why something didn't work. Even The Dark Knight has three villains in it, or six, depending on how you're counting them."
"It's just a question of whether you can pull it off, that's what it comes down to. I think a narrative is only as cluttered as you let it be. There are as many good films with half a dozen villains as there are bad ones, and I think that is a sort of facile thing to seize on as an explanation for, 'This is why this worked, and this is why this didn't work'."
It's a point well made, and with the film clocking in at 164 minutes, there's plenty of screen time to go around.
