I can’t imagine that many people are excited about a remake of Suspiria. Indeed, along with Deep Red, this is the Dario Argento remake that would have the highest backlash potential. But it presses ahead nonetheless. Shortly after David Gordon Green secured funding for the picture, he seems to have found his star in the form of Isabelle Fuhrman (Orphan, The Hunger Games).
Fuhrman joins a cast that includes Michael Nyqvist, Isabelle Huppert, Janet McTeer and Antje Traue, although it’s currently unclear as to who they will each play.
We do know about Fuhrman's character, though. She will play the role of Suzie an American student who enrols at a prestigious European dance school, but soon finds out that there’s something untoward about the school and its teachers. That's if Green follows the original as closely as he says he will.
In an interview with this very site, he spoke of his approach to the film and how it would focus on the sound design given that it was written with that in place. Sound of course played a major role in the original, with Goblin producing one of their stand out scores, as was often the case with Argento’s finest works. Fortunately, Green has secured the rights to the original score, which will hopefully lead to many more people becoming aware of the genius of Goblin should the film be a success.
The film is set to shoot in September with a definitive release date still unclear at this point.
