An interesting sounding western with horror elements is the latest project Guillermo Del Toro is linked to.
With work well underway on next summer's Pacific Rim, and a number of other projects rumoured to follow including his own take on Beauty and the Beast starring Emma Watson (and hopefully Ron Perlman), it’s little surprise that Guillermo del Toro is attached to yet another project.
The project in question is a western titled The Bloody Benders, which is based on a spec script by Adam Robitel. del Toro will be working on another draft of the script with Robitel, as well as producing with Angryfilms. He will help to search for a suitable director.
The film is based on true events and will focus on the Bender family who ran a general store and boarding house in the 1870s in Kansas. However, a number of the boarders never left as they would be dropped into a concealed murder room.
Here’s what del Toro has to say about the project:
"It is a beautiful and brutal yet poetic story, if you consider America back then, it was a great transition to modernity, but on the prairie, these were huge landscapes where people travelled and days and weeks on end would pass without communication. So nothing happens, then there is this brutal murder, and then it’s back to pastoral peace and quiet. That rhythm was very attractive to me.”
It certainly sounds like an interesting project and far from a conventional western. The setting would certainly lend itself well to horror elements so this is one that we’ll be looking forward to.
