Might The Incredible Hulk, as played by Mark Ruffalo, get a big budget movie of his own in 2015?
With The Avengers already cleaning up at the box office around the world, and with a massive US opening expected this coming weekend, you can comfortably say that Marvel's cinematic strategy of the last few years has paid off handsomely.
The irony, though, is it's the character who's had the bumpier big screen journey these past few years who's reaping the loudest cheers.
It spoils nothing to say that Mark Ruffalo's Hulk comes out of Joss Whedon's The Avengers movie with some of the most positive fan reactions, although the actor has been insisting that there are no plans to spin Hulk out into a third modern standalone movie.
It turns out, though, that fan reaction may be changing Marvel's mind.
In a piece over at Forbes, Marvel's Paul Gitter, in a piece about the merchandising of the film, suggests that a Hulk movie might be back on the agenda. Gitter reveals that Marvel's bosses have been "pleasantly surprised by the phenomenal response" to Hulk, adding "his sales are up in a major way. We repositioned him from where he was always misunderstood to now depicting him in a more heroic and aspirational manner".
Well, Joss Whedon and Zak Penn did. But anyway.
Gitter adds that there are plans to spin Hulk out "to a standalone program next year", with the possibility of a big budget franchise movie in 2015. If our calculations are correct, that gives Marvel a second Avengers film before that to see if Hulk's popularity really is sustainable.
