More details of the next God of War game, Ascension, have been released, including multiplayer…
Although Kratos' adventures up to this point have been a purely solo effort, with the Ghost of Sparta taking on all-comers on his lonesome, the next instalment of the series, God of War: Ascension, will see more than one hero enter the fray.
Sony has confirmed that the new game will feature a multiplayer component in which players can create their very own combatants, whom can then sell their souls to one of Greek mythology's finest deities, in return for awesome powers.
Players will be able to side with watery Poseidon, the evil Hades, the ruler of Olympus, Zeus, and, of course, the original God of War himself, Ares. Choices will grant various differing abilities and weapons, and characters will level up further through continued play.
The actual multiplayer doesn't appear to include co-op story play, but local multiplayer will make use of the game's fixed camera system to allow four players to slug it out on screen, Power Stone style.
Online there'll be eight player scraps, and it's been revealed that, Santa Monica may implement a Gears-style horde mode. There are team-based modes though, so it's not totally devoid of some form of co-operative action.
As well as straightforward combat, multiplayer will also feature other traditional game modes, such as a domination-style capture and control mode, which plays in a similar fashion to Unreal Tournament 2003's two point domination.
Levels will also pack in a variety of environmental hazards, some of which can be activated by other players or teams, giving the upper hand to those who use the traps strategically.
Multiplayer isn't really a feature that I think many GoW fans were really hankering for, as the game has been so fixated on the solo story in the past, but, as long as the single player doesn't suffer, then added content in the form of multiplayer will be welcome. However, there are already reports that the single player is shorter than before, so we'll have to see.
For now, have a look at the latest developer diary below, and check out some fresh multiplayer screenshots below related articles to the right.
