BAFTA has announced its full list of Television Awards nominees, which includes nods for Sherlock, The Fades, and Misfits, though nothing for Doctor Who or Being Human…
After the superb second series of the BBC’s Sherlock, many assumed the show was a shoo-in to repeat history and pick up this year’s Drama Series BAFTA, as it well deserves to do. Not so, as despite receiving a generous three nominations for Sherlock’s actors (Benedict Cumberbatch for Leading; Martin Freeman and Andrew Scott for Supporting), the BBC Conan Doyle update didn’t even make this year’s final four shortlist. Well, as Steven Moffat reassured Sherlock actress Louise Brealey on Twitter this morning, the show’s “…not exactly short of awards […] Or nominations!”.
BBC Three’s The Fades did make the shortlist, meaning a win will either be salve or salt in the wound following its recent cancellation (that, or more ammunition for the second series campaign?). Misfits too is in the Drama Series shortlist, alongside Spooks and Scott & Bailey.
Doctor Who is nowhere to be found in the nominations this year, which is dominated by Fred West drama Appropriate Adult, Shane Meadows’ This Is England ’88 and the Sherlock actor nods.
So what do we think? Will Martin Freeman have a shiny double of last year’s Supporting Actor award? Did Doctor Who or Being Human deserve a mention? Might a win for The Fades convince BBC4 it’s worth bringing back?
Voting for BAFTA's YouTube Audience awards opens today, and the TV Awards ceremony will take place on May 27th. You can see a full list of nominations below.
