When he was cast as The Hulk in Marvel's The Avengers, Mark Ruffalo took a moment to check out the fan reaction to the news: "I won't do that again"!
In a very rainy London yesterday, the assembled cast of Marvel’s incoming blockbuster, The Avengers (or Avengers Assemble, if you live in these fair isles) came together for a press conference to promote the film.
It was the usual drill for most of it, but interestingly, Mark Ruffalo chatted about the reaction to his casting as The Hulk in the movie.
It came after Tom Hiddleston had talked about the passionate fanbase for the film – “we’re lucky to have people who love the characters as much, if not more than we do… it’s a privilege to have people who care so much”, he said, with relation to the online support the film had been getting. And with that, Ruffalo picked up the thread.
“I was overcome by a moment of very poor judgement early on, by going online and seeing the response to me coming in and being cast as Dr Banner", he said "I won’t do that again! It wasn’t glowing, and I found the fan’s exuberant passion to be very, very brutal."
"I hope we’ve amended that!”, he added, with a grin on his face.
He said all of this in a fairly light way, lest you think he was moaning about it. And, as he says, when people see what he’s done with The Hulk, it’s hard to think that too many people will feel shortchanged.
Avengers Assemble is released on 26th April in the UK. Our review is here.
