Dark Souls

The wall has fallen, and the excellent Dark Souls is headed to PC, with extra content…

Although rumoured for some time, it's now been officially revealed that the superb, hardcore RPG, Dark Souls, is coming to the PC. After a huge outcry to port the game to the PC, From Software clearly listened, and has not only brought the punishing role player to the home computer, but has also endowed it with extra content.

Almost certainly featuring higher resolution and more detailed visuals, thanks to the PC's superior horsepower, Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition will also feature a new section of Lordran to explore, and undoubtedly die in, compete with new enemies and bosses, some of which can be seen in this trailer. These menacing new foes include Artorias of Abyss and the Chimera of Tomb.

The Prepare to Die Edition will also feature new weapons, armour and NPCs, and an improved online matchmaking system, something that the original console iteration failed to get right.

Dark Souls was, in my opinion, the best game released last year (with Demon's Souls taking the same accolade when it arrived on PS3 in 2009/10). The refreshing return to old school challenge, paired with some of the most well implemented combat mechanics and a stoic, dark fantasy world unlike any other, elevated it above even the mighty Skyrim (flame shields to maximum, captain!).

The infamously brutal difficulty really makes players work hard to progress, and develop true skill. Whilst this does put many people off, those who persevere get to feel a very real sense of achievement and satisfaction, and when that troublesome boss you've been spending hours on finally goes down, you can't help but feel exhilarated.

It'll be interesting to see how a heavily console-based RPG fares on the PC, and if PC RPG fans will warm to Dark Souls or not. What's certain, however, is the inevitable outcry for the PC extras to be made into console DLC. Petitions at the ready...

Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition will be out on PC on August 24.
