According to producer Jon Landau, Avatar 2 may not be ready for some time yet, with the sequel unlikely to be ready until 2015...
Whatever you thought of Avatar, you have to admire director James Cameron's commitment to making a decent sequel. 20th Century Fox would surely have preferred Cameron to push Avatar 2 through production within a couple of years, but the director, no doubt thanks to his box-office clout, is taking his time over the return trip to Pandora.
Producer Jon Landau has warned before that Avatar 2 might not be ready for a few years yet, but in an interview with Empire, he suggested that 2015 could be the most likely year for the film's cinema arrival. "We're not naming dates," Landau said, "but I think 2014 will be a tough date for us to make. It's about getting it right."
Landau hinted that effects team WETA may need the extra time to perfect the sequel's underwater performance capture, a potentially tricky technique no doubt inspired by James Cameron's frequent trips to the ocean floor. "It's not going to be all underwater," Landau pointed out. "It's going to be a place we go to, leave and come back to."
With Avatar 2 not out until 2015, that means its sequel won't be out until 2017. By then, we'll be very, very old.
