Dark Souls won’t be the last in the series, and From Software will be working on more punishing instalments…

The PS3 exclusive, Demon's Souls was a big hit, despite not being pushed as a AAA title. Demand for the notoriously difficult, hardcore RPG was enough to prompt a spiritual sequel in the form of Dark Souls, which also released on Xbox 360 and was, arguably, even more challenging than the first game.

Both releases have been very successful, winning the hearts and minds of gamers not afraid to tackle a real challenge, but there was doubt over whether or not the series would continue.

Well, those doubts may well be over, as From Software's head of R&D, Masanori Takeuchi has stated, in an interview with GameTrailers, that the series is far from finished.

He commented that dark, gritty RPGs are where the dev team likes to be, and that there's unlikely going to be any changes any time soon. He also commented that the company is well aware of the ravenous demand for a PC port of Dark Souls, but that the final decision to put this development into action isn't From Software's, but the publisher, Namco Bandai.

It would also appear as though a Souls game may make its way onto tablets and smart phones, according to Director of Business Development, Eiichi Nakajima. If this does happen, it won't be a case of a simplified title, though. Takeuchi, who welcomes the challenge of developing for these platforms, insists that From's games are for core gamers, and this will still be the case on mobile platforms.

Both Demon's and Dark Souls were incredible games, so it's very good news, indeed, that the series will continue, and PC gamers may also get chance to feel the pain if Namco Bandai gives the project a go. Come on Namco, you know it makes sense.
