We finally get a look at Brian Henson’s dark detective story mixing Muppets and human characters courtesy of some concept art.
It’s been rumoured for a while now that Brian Henson, son of the late great Jim Henson, was planning to direct The Happytime Murders, based on Todd Berger’s script. It's a dark detective story, set in a world where puppets and humans co-exist, and while it's been under wraps thus far, it's a fascinating-sounding project.
Could the covers be coming off the film, though? A first piece of concept art has been released, which you can see here, to show the tone that the filmmakers are aiming for. Appreciating you can read too much into one picture, I still love the little touches included and how that it’s dark and clearly quite playful at the same time.
The blending of characters traditionally associated with children’s entertainment and hardboiled detective material was, of course, masterfully handled in Who Framed Roger Rabbit (although this film looks to aim for considerably darker material), so it’s clear that this kind of thing can work. Here's hoping that Brian Henson manages to pull this one off, because it's looking utterly intriguing thus far...
