Venom might just be finally getting a standalone movie, putting the memory of Spider-Man 3 to bed. And Chronicle’s Josh Trank might just be directing…
Comfortably the nicest movie surprise of the year has been Josh Trank’s Chronicle, a superb superpower movie seemingly out of nowhere. Made on a small budget, and bringing in over $100m at the worldwide box office, it’s been a genuine success story, on both a critical and a commercial level.
Trank had been linked with taking the reins of the Fantastic Four movie reboot earlier this year, although nothing in the way of confirmation came from that. He also told us that there were ideas for Chronicle 2, which we’d imagine he might just be exploring.
However, Sony may have got in first, as the Los Angeles Times now reports that the studio is in talks with Trank over helming the Spider-Man spin-off movie, Venom.
Venom, you might remember, has already been seen on the big screen, in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3. It would be no understatement to suggest that the film did not do the character justice, and that we wouldn’t expect Topher Grace to be returning to the role.
A standalone Venom movie has been planned for some time, most recently with Gary Ross circling the project. Ross since went on to direct The Hunger Games, and it’s believed that the draft script that was in place for the Venom movie then will not now be used. Instead, a new writer is also apparently on the cards.
We’re keen to see just what Trank does next, and if he did get his hands on Venom, and Sony gave him the space to shape the film properly, then put us down for a ticket.
