The Dark Knight Rises round-up

As post-production continues on Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, news of the project has unsurprisingly been quieter. However, the past week has seen a sprinkling of news pop up, so it made sense to round it all up in one place. Which we have.

Firstly, then, GQ has been talking to costume designer Lindy Hemming, and she’s shed some light on the look and feel they’ve gone for with Tom Hardy’s Bane.

”Bane was meant to look like a cross between a dictator and a revolutionary,", she revealed. "I designed the coat myself - it took a year. We took inspiration from a Swedish army jacket and a French Revolution frock coat and amalgamated the two. It was a pain to have made, because in LA shearling is not their sort of thing: there weren't the tailors who could work with the fabric.”

With a bit of luck, the coat will also keep Bane warm in the winter. Can’t have him getting cold.

Hemming also hinted that the Batsuit itself might have come in for a bit of extra work. “There’s very few changes”, she said. “The only modifications are to do with the story. But I can’t tell you what they are.”

Over at DIY, meanwhile, they’ve been chatting to actor David Gyasi, who is starring in the BBC’s White Heat. Turns out, he’s got a small role in The Dark Knight Rises, too. As you might expect, he doesn’t spill the film’s story or anything like that. But he did talk about working on the film.

“I didn't get a script”, he said. “I had the audition in my head. I arrived on set, and Christopher Nolan was giving me the lines I had to say. He would literally say, this is what just happened, and this is what you're reacting to. I know absolutely nothing! I know that sounds like a cop-out, but I was there, and I worked with Tom Conti and a little bit with Christian Bale, but I was there on a need to know basis. I'm hoping that I'm still in the film, as I'm a fan of the films, so I'll be watching with vested interest!

Elsewhere, Wally Pfister, the director of photography on Christopher Nolan’s films, including his Batman trilogy, is to make his directorial debut. He’s set to helm an unnamed script from Jack Paglen later this year, for Alcon Entertainment. The genre and story remain unclear, although we’ll fill you in when we know more.

Finally, a bit of speculation on our part. Given that the film is out in July, and given that The Avengers has just released its second full trailer, might we expect a new trailer for The Dark Knight Rises this side of Easter? We’ll keep you posted…
