Vertigo launches a new series from Fables writer Bill Willingham this Wednesday. Jennie gets folkloric and fabulous with Fairest...
For those that don't live with their heads perpetually in the fairytale bubble, Fables is the hugely successful comic series created by writer Bill Willingham and published as part of the DC Comics' Vertigo imprint.
Fables features characters from traditional Grimm fairytales - such as Snow White, Cinderella, and Jack of beanstalk fame - who have been displaced in modern day New York. The characters form a secret community called Fabletown, and the comic follows the trouble they find themselves in.
With over one hundred issues and over fifteen trade paperbacks in circulation it makes sense that the creators would want to start a fresh ongoing series to draw in new readers.
Hitting comic book store shelves and digital storefronts 7 March is Fairest - a story focusing on the women of the Fables universe, their back-story and some of the secrets you may not know about them.
Lined up for interior art are Phil Jimenez and Andy Lanning, with covers by Adam Hughes.
As Willingham states, "When you have a dozen or more Fable women claiming to be the fairest in the land, it seems only fair we create this series where each one of them has a chance to strut her stuff and make her case."
It's an exciting prospect. Fans of folklore will know that some of the existing incarnations of fairytale princesses don't often get a chance to do anything but look pretty and get married.
The book also fits in well with the arrival of more, updated, re-imaginings of the Brothers Grimm's finest this year in Mirror Mirror, Snow White and the Huntsman, NBC's Grimm and even more to come.
So far, Fairest looks like it may give us some of the kick-ass female role models we hope to find in fairytales and comics, but only time will tell.
Jennie's cosplay blog is over at Fancy Dresscapades.
