The Dark Knight Rises

Hans Zimmer has been nattering about the secrecy surrounding The Dark Knight Rises...

An interesting piece has gone live over at Hero Complex, where composer Hans Zimmer has been discussing his work on the upcoming The Dark Knight Rises. In the interview, Zimmer discusses how he’s used crowdsourcing for the score to the movie, by using the chants of people right across the world.

He then moved on to talk about Christopher Nolan himself, and the veil of secrecy that seemingly surrounds his work.

“Well, I think that there are two elements to this”, mused Zimmer. “One is, I think, to be able to do really good work, you have to have the chance to fail in privacy. And if everybody’s watching you on the Internet, I think it stifles creativity. And I think Dark Knight is the perfect example of this idea. Everybody knew we were making a Batman movie. But until it came out they didn’t know it was going to be that sort of a Batman movie.”

And Zimmer makes a fine point: “Isn’t that what we’re supposed to do?”, he asks. “We’re supposed to go and surprise you. And part of the experience has to be a surprise. It feels a little bit like we’re working very hard at protecting part of what is great about movies - the surprise. Because it seems like the world doesn’t want you to do that anymore.”

Given the very public shoot of The Dark Knight Rises, it’ll be fascinating to see just what surprises Nolan and his team have managed to keep wrap up. We’ll have a clearer idea, of course, when the film arrives in July.

In the meantime, the interview with Zimmer can be found right here.
