Sony’s post apocalyptic take on the Zorro legend has found its lead in Gael Garcia Bernal.
Mexican handsome man Gael Garcia Bernal looks set to swish his sword on screens (not in a Y Tu Mamá También way), as he’s signed on to play Zorro in a new take of the character. This time, said character will be appearing in a post apocalyptic version of the story, titled Zorro Reborn.
Full details of the story are unclear at this stage, other than we can expect Bernal’s Zorro is on a revenge mission. The script was originally written by Lee Shipman and Brian McGreevy (Harker) and Glenn Gers (Fracture) has subsequently been called in to provide a re-write. The film is currently without a director but with Bernal now attached we should expect the job to be filled shortly, as 20th Century Fox seems keen on the project.
It will be interesting to see how this pans out, as 1998’s The Mask of Zorro starring Antonio Banderas was a decent hit for Sony (and a corking film, too) and 2005’s The Legend of Zorro, whilst not as good as the original still made a tidy profit for the studio. So it’s little surprise that they’re also developing an origin tale, simply titled Zorro.
More news on both Zorro projects when they’re available.
