Metal Gear Online, the multiplayer component of MGS4, is being switched off…
Some sad news for Metal Gear fans has arrived. Metal Gear Online, the popular multiplayer mode for the impressive PS3 original hit, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, is going to be taken down in June, as the servers are to be switched off.
Running for nearly four years, the service, according to Konami, was only supposed to run for three years, but an extra year was added out of respect to the loyal fans.
The explanation for the service shutdown provided by Konami was simply, "we have regretfully come to a point where players have experienced all that this iteration of Metal Gear Online is able to offer."
Although the closure of the service is sure to upset the MGO hardcore, it's not all bad news. A couple of months before the shutdown, the expansion packs will be made available for free, so you can make the most of the time left with a fully furnished copy.
The timeline (in Japanese Standard Time), is as follows:
March 21st 2012 16:00 (JST)
Closure of MGO Online Shop.
April 24th 2012 18:00 (JST)
Expansion packs and Preset Codec Message Appeal Packs will be available for free download.
*Note: Registration for new player characters will not be available during this time.
Reward shop equipment will be available for free.
* With the exception of "non-sale" items.
June 12th 2012 23:59 (JST)
End of online service.
