CBS has now greenlit a radical new idea: a Sherlock Holmes series set in the present day! Er...

Hmmmm. If you were producer Sue Vertue this morning, how would you be feeling? Your latest show, Sherlock, has completed a massively successful second series, leaving people salivating for a third. And then, obviously, er, entirely unrelated to this, CBS pushed ahead for its previously-mooted idea of a US contemporary Sherlock Holmes series.

Do you take that as flattery? Or something that’s, ahem, not flattery?

Either way, it’s definitely happening. Deadline has reported that CBS has ordered a pilot for the show Elementary, which is described as “a modern take on the cases of the pipe-smoking private eye created by Arthur Conan Doyle, with Sherlock now living in New York City”.

There’s no word yet on who is set to play Sherlock Holmes, and why CBS would even bother going against something as strong as the BBC’s Sherlock. But expect the pilot to be put together later this year.

It's a good job it won't be instantly compared to a multi-award winning commercially successful and critically adored hit show that's based around a not dissimilar idea...
