CJ reports that JRPG legend Hironobu Sakaguchi is coming to the UK...

The name Hironobu Sakaguchi might not ring any bells for you, but his work speaks for itself.

The Japanese designer, producer and director on some of the world's most renowned and well-known RPGs will be speaking at the Midlands Comic Con on 18 February.

A prominent games developer, Sakaguchi created Square's Final Fantasy series in 1987 and has stewarded many famous titles since. Heard of Kingdom Hearts, Chrono Trigger, Vagrant Story or Xenogears? Thought so.

Sakaguchi will be talking about his career and an upcoming project for Wii, The Last Story. The new game is released on 24 February and follows a band of mercenaries adventuring across an island at the core of a struggling empire. If it ain't broken, eh?

Final Fantasy fuelled the JRPG trend in the 1990s and broke through to the mainstream with the stonking Final Fantasy VII in 1997, an exclusive on console to Sony's original PlayStation. The game would've carried on the tradition of Square publishing for Nintendo, if PlayStation had launched as a CD peripheral for the SNES as had been intended. The series latest installment, Final Fantasy XIII-2, will be released for Xbox 360 and PS3 at the end of the month in the US and on 3 February in Europe.

With the announcement about Sakaguchi it seems British conventions have a big month ahead of them in February. Marvel Comics mogul Stan Lee is headlining London Super Comic Convention at the ExCeL Centre on 25-26 February. It will mark the comics demigod's first UK convention in four decades. Time to get out those autograph books!
