According to producer Jon Landau, a sequel to James Cameron’s Avatar may be not appear until around 2016…

Anyone clamouring for more blue aliens, exotic foliage and robot knife fights will probably feel a little deflated by the following words. According to the marvellous Bleeding Cool, producer Jon Landau has revealed that a sequel to Avatar may be much further away than previously thought.

Avatar 2 was originally scheduled to be ready for December 2014, but Landau has said that the sequel could actually be four years away, placing it in 2016 – or as Bleeding Cool point out, December 2015 at the very earliest

Given that Avatar is already more than two years old, that’s quite a surprising gap – a sign, perhaps, of just how much clout Cameron has in Hollywood, since a less powerful director would probably have been browbeaten into delivering a sequel by now (that said, Cameron needed a fair amount of clout to get a film as wildly expensive as Avatar made in the first place).

It’s possible, too, that Cameron and his army of filmmakers are biding their time until it can deliver a technical spectacle as dazzling as the first movie. The good news is, though, that there’ll be less of a gap between Avatar 2 and the closing chapter in the trilogy – the two films will be shot back to back, with Avatar 3 following a year later.
