Warner Bros might just be bringing in some help from a Nolan to get the live action Akira remake back up and running...

At the end of last week, it was revealed that Warner Bros had applied the brakes to the planned Hollywood live action remake of Akira. This is a project that’s burned through a few directors now, before arriving at the desk of Unknown helmer Jaume Collet-Serra, and also one that’s already been through one round of apparently quite deep budget cutting.

Warner Bros was reported to have ordered more budget trimming, with just a couple of weeks to sort things out, before it grounds the project for good. Turns out, though, that the studio remains keen to make the film.

According to Variety, “Insiders said a new writer will probably be brought on over the next two weeks to focus on character elements and particularly on the pic’s look”. You can make of that what you will.

On the shortlist for potential writers? There’s Jonathan Nolan (whose work on the Batman films of sibling Christopher needs little introduction) and Michael Green, who penned, er, Green Lantern.

Our guess is that this Akira is still likely to happen, but what shape the final movie is spat out in remains anyone’s guess. It’s hard to be too enthusiastic about it…
