Starbreeze Studios’ forthcoming reboot of Syndicate gets a new trailer, which showcases its four-player co-op mode. Take a look here…

When it was announced that Bullfrog’s much-loved 90s action strategy game Syndicate was getting a first-person shooter reboot, reactions were decidedly mixed. As we’ve learned more about Starbreeze Studios’ project, though, our initially frosty opinions of the game have thawed somewhat; the perspective may be different, but it’s heartening to see that some of the things that made the original game so great have made it into the 2012 version.

The blood-curdling violence is present and correct, for one thing, and the ability to hack into non-player characters’ brains and control them for your own diabolical ends also makes an appearance. Like the original, Syndicate’s about futuristic corporations vying for global control, with heavily armed cyborgs serving as their loyal foot soldiers.

Although the squads of assassins won’t be controlled by one player, as they were in the 90s, Syndicate 2012 will introduce a four-player co-op mode – something that would have been downright wonderful in the original, but wasn’t available. To highlight this, along comes a new trailer, which aims to impart some of the gory flavour of the finished game, if not much of its first-person viewpoint.

The most intriguing bit? The promise of “Nine missions from the original Syndicate.” If they can throw in the explosive Gauss gun in too, we’ll be very happy indeed.

Syndicate’s due out in Europe on the 24th February for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
