Spoilers ahoy, as a press release for the toy line supporting The Avengers' release hints at an additional antagonist to stand alongside Loki...
The release of The Avengers draws ever closer, but full details on the threat the team face will face have yet to be determined. It now appears, however, that some light has been shed on the matter, in the form of a press release regarding the toy line that will support the film’s April launch.
It’s safe to say that, if you’re looking to avoid spoilers for the film, you should cease reading, but if you don’t mind having the identity of the villain that will potentially be teaming up with Loki revealed, then here’s what the press release says:
“Charging straight out of theatres and onto your tabletop, Marvel’s The Avengers Movie HeroClix set features heroes like Captain America and Thor as they battle the villainy of the Red Skull and Loki! Each Counter-Top display includes standard one-figure boosters as well as new three-figure “Team Packs”! Team Packs are designed with strong thematic undertones – play a Hydra force or defend freedom with a S.H.I.E.L.D. team pack!”
The return of the Red Skull is certainly an interesting move, particularly given that the trailers appeared to hint at the presence of threats such as the Krulls or the Kree. Of course, this release may not mean that Hugo Weaving is certain to reprise his role, or indeed that the Red Skull will return for certain.
For some, the Red Skull wasn't as menacing as he could have been in last year’s Captain America, but the prospect of him returning is still an exciting one, no matter how slight it may be.
The Avengers hits UK cinemas on the 27th April.
