Sony is pressing ahead with its plans to film The Girl Who Played With Fire, despite the mixed commercial performance to date of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo…

Going into the Christmas blockbuster season, with Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo all going head to head, our guess at the start of December was that Sherlock Holmes would walk away with the box office crown.

Not for the first time, it turns out we were wrong.

It was the resurgence of the Mission: Impossible franchise that won out, leaving Sherlock 2 in its wake. But the best reviewed of the three, David Fincher’s take on The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, trailed the pair at the box office. By a bit of distance.

Costing around $90m to make, the film has currently taken $60m at the US box office, and only around $12m elsewhere on the planet. And that’s led to suggestions that Sony may abandon its plans to press ahead with the full Stieg Larsson Millennium trilogy.

However, it looks like the firm might just be playing the long game. Talking to Entertainment Weekly, a Sony representative insisted that that the film “continues to do strong business and nothing has changed with respect to development of the next book”.

Steven Zaillian is currently still earmarked to work on the script for The Girl Who Played With Fire, although it’s a long way from sure as to whether David Fincher will return to direct. There had been suggestions that the next two films may be made back to back, but there’s been nothing further on that.

Even if the films don’t immediately set the box office alight, there’s some substance to the thinking that they may be long-burning catalogue titles for Sony, that’ll reward the studio many times over by the time the trilogy is complete. We’ll pass on more details with regards the next film as we get them…
