Is Khan the Star Trek villain after all? If he is, Benicio Del Toro won't be playing him, as he fails to reach a deal to feature in JJ Abrams' upcoming sequel...

It’s been a couple of weeks now since it was revealed that Benicio Del Toro was in talks to play the villain in JJ Abrams’ Star Trek sequel. And while no formal announcement had been forthcoming about his involvement, it looked likely that he’d be joining the shoot of the film next month.

Turns out, that won’t be the case.

Vulture is reporting that Del Toro and Paramount Pictures couldn’t reach a deal for the actor’s involvement, and as a consequence, any involvement he had with the project ended last week.

With production due to start in the middle of January, that leaves JJ Abrams’ cast list with a fairly significant gap in it, one he doesn’t have too much time to fill.

Meanwhile, in spite of the denial from JJ Abrams with regards the identity of the film’s villain, rumours persist that it will be Khan. Citing a “highly placed source”, and acknowledging Abrams’ denial, Vulture nonetheless suggests that Khan will indeed be the villain of the piece.

Is this Abrams playing his cards close to his chest, or have the assorted sources got it all wrong? We’ll find out in due course, no doubt…
