Just what tone is the reboot of RoboCop set to take? Director Jose Padilha has revealed just a little more...

Following Friday’s news that Starship Troopers is being remade, some more details on another of Paul Verhoeven’s films currently undergoing the reboot treatment have been revealed.

It’s been known that RoboCop has been scheduled for a remake for some time, and that Jose Padilha, helmer of the rather brilliant Elite Squad movies, is down to direct. Last month he revealed that he intended to focus on the process of bringing a man back from the dead and turning him into a robot. And in a recent interview, he has now revealed some more details of his version of RoboCop.

“Wars in the future are going to be fought with drones. We won’t send a plane with a pilot in, it will be drone. It’s getting that way now and ten years from now that’s how wars are going to be fought.", he said.

He went on: “But what if a drone goes wrong – who is to blame then? Do you blame the drone? And that problem asks if you can you consider a robot guilty of a crime. Or is it the corporation that made the robot that is guilty?”

The corporate aspect of the original sounds to be very much intact then, which is fitting given that the themes of the original RoboCop are as relevant today as they were when it was made.

I think it’s much better for a director to look to put his own spin on the film rather than merely attempt to rehash the original. Thus far, it sounds as though Padilha has a better grasp on what made RoboCop so special than anyone involved in the sequels or spin off TV series.

More on Padilha’s RoboCop when we get it.
