An 80s Roger Corman producton, Chopping Mall, gets lined up for a remake. Albeit one with a supernatural, rather than sci-fi, flavour...

If your idea of a nightmare is a shopping trip to your local shopping centre, then the prospect of the 1986 horror movie Chopping Mall will no doubt terrify you.

The film finds a group of kids partying in a shopping mall after hours (as you do), and being hunted down by security robots who go on a murderous rampage after malfunctioning. It was a Roger Corman production, so it was a schlocky piece of cinema that was far from a masterpiece, but it was reasonably entertaining nonetheless.

The film is the latest 80s horror property, though, to be slated for a remake. Robert Hall is attached to direct, and Hall is also writing the script, with assistance from his production partner Kevin Bocarde.

It seems as though it won’t be a straight remake, though, and beyond the title and basic set up it will go in its own direction. Hall said of the project that “It will retain the basic concept of young people trapped in a mall; however, the story will have a darker, supernatural spin.”

I have to say that I was surprised when I heard this announced as it’s far from the most obvious of Corman’s productions to be remade. But presumably given the relative success of Piranha 3D, filmmakers are looking at what other schlocky 80s fare they can remake and turn a profit. I'm not sure the supernatural element sounds particularly enticing, mind, as the sci-fi aspect of the original gave it a certain charm.

I guess we’ll have to see how it fares if and when it comes out...
