One of the busiest actors working today, The Mighty Statham, adds another project to his packed slate of upcoming films.
Jason Statham is an actor that, quite rightfully, gets a lot of love on this site. Announcements of new films starring him are, thus, always well received. We built an e-mail inbox just to receive them.
Anyway, IM Global has announced that it will fully fund Hummingbird, which will be a $20m action drama where The Statham will play an ex-Special Forces soldier who makes a living in the criminal underworld of London, but adopts a new identity and becomes an avenging angel. Yikes.
It sounds like fairly standard material based on that, yet the fact that it will mark the directing debut of Steven Knight makes this even more interesting. Knight has written films such as the rather brilliant Eastern Promises, Dirty Pretty Things and is credited as a one of the many writers for Clash of the Titans 2. There’s no word as to whether Knight has penned the script for Hummingbird, however.
IM Global also financed Safe, another Statham vehicle that’s set for a UK release next March. Hummingbird is set to begin shooting in London early next year, and a provisional release date has yet to be announced. We plan to audition to feature in the film.
