Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn and star Ryan Gosling are attached to the remake of Logan's Run. And now, there's a new writer, too.
Nicolas Winding Refn is a director with a number of quality films to his name, but after the success of Drive this year, I think it’s safe to say that there’s a fair amount of anticipation as to what he does next. And his Drive star, Ryan Gosling, too.
They’re currently working together on Thai boxing drama Only God Forgives, and it was also confirmed earlier this year that they’ll be teaming up once again for the long planned remake of the 70s sci-fi classic Logan’s Run, which is set to begin filming next year.
When Winding Refn and Gosling were confirmed, Alex Garland was announced as the screenwriter for the projectl along with Will Beall, who worked on the Gosling-starring Gangster Squad
But it's now been revealed that a new writer has been hired to work on the script, and the job has gone to Andrew Baldwin. Baldwin was brought to the attention of Hollywood execs when his script for The West Is Dead made the Black List (the list of the best unproduced screenplays). He has since written Red Asphalt for Timur Bekmembatov, and has recently set up the period Yakuza project The Outsider at Warner Bros. Something which presumably led to getting the job here, as Logan’s Run is a Warner Bros property.
The remake has been planned for over a decade now, as producers Joel Silver and Akiva Goldsmith have attempted to find the right director. Their search has seen the likes of Bryan Singer, James McTeigue and Carl Erik Rinsch attached.
I can’t think of a more interesting combination than Winding Refn and Gosling to tackle the material right now, though, and sincerely hope they remain attached and get to make the film as planned.
A release date has yet to be set for the film, but we’ll bring you more information on the project when we get it.
