Is Pixar considering a sequel to The Incredibles? Here's its director Brad Bird, to answer that very question...
Whilst our general preference is for Pixar to be trying new things rather than follow-ups, the strength of the Toy Story follow-ups is hard to argue with. And while Cars 2 was disappointing, the firm clearly knows how to put a quality sequel together.
It’s a prequel that’s coming up soon from Pixar, as Monsters University is arriving in cinemas in 2013. But could we be getting a second adventure for The Incredibles after that?
Of all the films that Pixar has made, it’s arguably The Incredibles that’s most crying out for a further instalment. And its director, Brad Bird, seems to agree.
Bird is about to unleash his new film, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, into the world. And as part of the promotional tour for that movie, he’s been asked about The Incredibles 2.
Talking to Movies.com, he says that "I think the reason it hasn't [happened] yet is because the studio would like me to do it, if there were another Incredibles. And I've told them that I'm not really friendly to have someone else take away my child. I would like to think that I have several good ideas that could be incorporated into the next Incredibles, but I don't have a whole movie yet, and the last thing I want to do is do it just because it would open big, or something like that."
He went on to add that "I want to do it because I have something that will be as good or better than the original. Toy Story 2 was, to me, a perfect sequel, because it absolutely respected the first film but found new places to go without selling out its characters. So if I could come up with an idea that is to Incredibles what Toy Story 2 is to Toy Story, I would do it in a second."
The Incredibles marked a slight change in direction for Pixar when it was first released in 2004. It was the first time that someone had come in and written and directed a Pixar movie in quite the way Brad Bird did (he wasn’t part of the original Pixar team). And it also marked the firm’s first PG-rated animated movie, with a slightly more adult feel to it.
We’ll keep you posted on sequel news. Fingers crossed this one happens.
