Roland Emmerich has taken a bit of a diversion with his latest film, Anonymous, which looks into whether Shakespeare was the true author of the many works that bear his name. Sadly, though, Anonymous really isn’t very good at all, and it confirms the suspicion that Emmerich is on safer ground when orchestrating computers to hurl explosions and fancy graphics at the screen.
Which leads us neatly to Independence Day 2. Emmerich has been asked as to the current status of the oft-rumoured sequel, and he reports that it’s quietly bubbling along.
Talking to The Lantern, Emmerich revealed that he’d had a conversation with the film’s star, Will Smith, about the movie. “We've talked to him, but naturally he wants to see a script, which I totally understand," he said.
That script continues to be worked on now, although there’s no fixed time window in mind at the moment. “I’d say hold tight”, Emmerich said. “It’s happening soon”.
Our thinking on this is it’s probably not a good idea to hold your breath waiting for it. Firstly, because it’s going to take years at the earliest, and holding your breath for that length of time just isn’t practical. But also, because we wouldn’t be surprised if Independence Day 2 didn’t come together at all. We’ll keep you posted…
