After many years of development, the live action take on the classic anime movie Akira is finally happening…
We don’t detect an awful lot of warmth for the idea of a Hollywood-funded live action take on Akira, and when the project seemingly hit the skids earlier this year, when Albert Hughes dropped out of directing, tears were not forthcoming.
However, Warner Bros appears to have been able to slot everything back into place, and Variety is now reporting that its Akira project is now a definite go. It’s confirmed the appointment, too, of Jaume Collet-Serra (Unknown) as its director, and production may even begin in the first month or two of next year.
Furthermore, the search for a leading man may nearly be over, too. Apparently, the frontrunner for the role is Garrett Hedlund, who we last saw in the lead role in Tron: Legacy. He’s not been confirmed, though, but he’s apparently the running favourite.
It looks like Warner Bros is, therefore, preparing its Akira for a 2013 release. When we get more information on it, we’ll let you know.
